This is the first of many more to come. I’m looking forward to Juan being the start of it.’ David Moyes is clearly intent on bringing in more big names strengthen the flailing squad and to disperse the negative clouds that have been lingering around Old Trafford, however which area of the team should be of primary concern?
Juan Mata the Former two time Chelsea Player Of The Year will now be wearing the famous red of Manchester United! However as all United fans know that although Mata’s signing will certainly make us more competitive in our challenge for the Top Four this season it alone will not be enough to catch up to the likes of Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea in the race for the title. It looks as if this season we play with what we currently have and additions will be made in the summer, but who will these additions be and what positions they are in is the interesting question.
Defence: Our defence is a cause for concern, goalkeeper aside we have either lack of depth as well as a change of guard taking place. This transitional phase is one that has definitely cost us. Out of the 22 Premier League games played we have managed to keep only 6 clean sheets conceding 27 goals in the process that’s more than we conceded in the whole of last season! Why? Our historically reliable partnership of Ferdinand and Vidic is no longer the solid wall it once was. Age is catching up with both and both have suffered from a lack of pace and agility. Rio’s reading of the game remains second to none and Vidic is still a master of the air however both need to pass on the guard. Our CB’s in waiting Jones, Evans and Smailing although have shown individual qualities they have failed to perform at the top level consistently that is required. The constant reshuffle has not helped either as they Evans aside, have not cemented a specific position, The same applies for our LB Evra. Although a great attacking threat specially during set peices his defensive errors are becoming a bit too common for a fans liking. A change of guard is again needed and Buttner does not seem to the task at the moment. The RB position remains Rafael’s stronghold however lack of competiotion from actual RB’s (not makeshift RB’s such as Jones) is not helping our cause either.
A younger LB is required. From recent reports the top canditates for this position remain Luke Shaw of Sputhhapmton and Felipe Luis of Athletico Madrid. The 28 year old £18 Million rated LB has 4 International caps for Brazil and is currently enjoying a grreat season with his club who sit top in the La Liga table. The much younger English fullback is only 18 and is rated at around £22 million and has shown excellent potential as a long term replacement. However Chelsea are also in the running for the young starlet who continues to impress which would make this transfer tough however very much possible. Which LB enters OT only the summer can tell.
Although there have been some hiccups in the CB position I think that there is still enough left in Rio and Vidic to really guide the transition. Both have been loyal servants to the club and would not only pass important experience but would also instill the Manchester United psychology that they have of never giving up and fighting till the last whistle. These are priceless traits that any MUFC CB must have to guide the team from the back.
Midfield: United’s midfield is crying out for a specific type of midfielder! A box to box midfielder and why they were not willing to negotiate with Newcastle over Cabaye who was available this window surprised me! Cabaye fulfilled what United require. He has a fantastic passing range, tons of experience at a top level and ability to play from one opponents box to the other and score goals in the process. With 7 goals already this season he is in inspired form and would lessen the burden on our strikers to score. Perhaps Mata will help us in that cause as well! A midfielder that we do seem to be interested is Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos. The German international is often labelled a ‘complete midfielder’. Moyes was scouting the German star who has seemingly denied a contract. Although more comfortable in a CAM role he can very much drop deeper and play as more of a deep lying play maker in the CM position. I would love to see him partner up with a rough and tough midfielder who can tackle to provide defensive cover. Fellani and Fletcher seem to fit that bill however a certain Arturo Vidal would fit that role perfectly….He has however unfortunately for us MUFC fans signed a new deal with Juventus that ties him to the Turin based club 2017. Another possibility is Dortmunds Gundogan however he has just come out of a serious back injury which has kept him out of the side this season and Dortmund would be unwilling to sell even further after the sales of Gotze, Lewandowski and Kagawa. The season long injury of Blaszczykowski does not help our cause either as the injury ravaged side and last years CL finalists will be unwilling to sell more stars. Best of luck to both the injury victims and I wish them a quick recovery!
Forwards: Were good to go. Injuries to Rooney and RVP have exposed us a bit however Welbeck still very much in his development phases did impress however Hernandez has seem to lost form and being 4th choice will not make the Mexican International and much loved United star happy. I can see him leaving us this summer unfortunately for more playing time. With an fit RVP and Rooney our strike force can easily challenge the very best in the league!
